Joan Dempsey - you left a comment yesterday which, simply, read "maudlin crap". I have never heard this term. So I looked it up. Turns out "maudlin" is from the 14th century and was introduced into english lexicon in reference to Mary Magdelen. Specifically, the allusions to the Magdalene crying and loosely is defined as "overly sentimental, as if drunk." This, of course, bears a negative conotation and places the Magdalene in an unfavorable frame. My suspicion would be that at the time the Roman Catholic church was pushing the male deity worship, and in true "Davinci Code" form was suppressing any worship of the sacred feminine. Hence painting an overly sentimental Magdalene. The origin of the word "Villain" actually has similar roots, originally referring to french farmers. In any case, thank you. That was quite the journey. PS - the Leftovers is lousy with sentiment - so I totally agree.
